Focusing on the dynamic affinity between the two mediums, Insides concentrates its’ attention on their bodily relationship, featuring artworks that consider the experience of inhabiting a body and the tensions inherent in perception, self-expression, image-making —- and how that can become manifest by way of the lens and the picture plane.

Begun as a conversation between friends, Insides aims to forgo a siloing by discipline in favour of an invitation. Contending both with the history of body art and the confusions of its material present, the exhibition underscores how methodologies used by artists across screen and canvas are often intertwined. Practices of catharsis and physicality that recur again and again, exploring similar problematics and at times addressing related issues.

As is that case with many of the featured artists–whose practices’ at times dip into either medium, Insides contends that much is to be gained by living, making, and viewing between video and painting.
